Thirst Project- 2nd Annual Thirst Gala

SHE Boutique was proud to be a sponsor of the Thirst Project's 2nd Annual Thirst Gala on June 28, 2011. We are excited to report that the event raised more than $150,000 for the Thirst Project!

The Thirst Project is a movement of high school and college students raising awareness of and brining solutions to the global water crisis. A staggering one billion people on the planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water and proper sanitation, causing the deaths of 4,500 children a year. The Thirst Project, founded by Seth Maxwell, wants to change this. The project travels the country, visiting middle schools, high schools, and college campuses, helping to equip the students with the knowledge and resources needed to start their own fundraisers to make an impact on the issue. By 2015, the project's goal is to provide safe, clean water and sanitation to one million people.

The 2nd Annual Thirst Gala was hosted Chyler Leigh, of Grey's Anatomy, and JR Bourne, star of MTV's Teen's Wolf. The evening began with a fabulous cocktail reception and silent auction, which was then followed with a live auction, gala dinner and live entertainment. Over 25 different media outlets were in attendance, as well as the entire cast of MTV's Teen Wolf.

As one of the top photographers and stylists in the Midwest fashion scene, it was a pleasure having the opportunity to chat with Chicago's very own Helen Berkun about her budding career, her sense of style, and her favorite picks at SHE.

For those who are not familiar with your work, who are some of the people you've styled? We like a little "kiss and tell"- feel free to brag.

"Oh wow, there are so many wonderful campaigns and people I've worked with...international DOVE CAMPAIGNS... BENTLEY GOLD COAST,...[John Malkovich's line] TECHNO BOHEMIAN, ERIN ANDREWS Of 'DANCING WITH THE STARS' and HGTV's MONICA PEDERSEN.

Your background is in photography, and I feel that makes you more discerning of how a final shot is going to turn out. There must be a feeling of duality between the clothes looking right and a photo with perfect composition- how do you balance those two?

"...I feel like it's so natural for me to do both. I think the fact that I'm a photographer makes me a better stylist and being a stylist makes me a better photographer. The two simply go hand in hand....Most successful creatives are able to do so many different things. I always look at clothes and think about how they will photograph and not only how they will fit. I think about the way fabric will reflect or soak up the light. I'm also able to do hair and make-up if push comes to shove. If need be I can be a one stop shop that will create a final image. I think that's very important!"

Much like a woman's wardrobe, a great outfit is composed of pieces from everywhere; the high mixed with the low: What portion of that does SHE fill?

"The fact is; I can get a pair of leggings here, a fantastic party dress, a leather jacket and accessories, you also seem to be like a one stop shop. I also love all the intricate lines you carry. I feel like I come into the store and I, myself, learn about all these fantastic new designers, or ones that I've never heard of. Anyone can go to Saks or Neimans and get a [Roberto] Cavalli or a Versace, however chances are you'll see the dress somewhere else or on someone else. Somehow SHE feels more personal, more unique, more special!"

Grace Coddington of Vogue has said that editorials are about telling a story, first and foremost, and that it is the job of the garments to aid in that story; a supporting role of sorts. Do you agree with that? Do the clothes come first or the story?

"...Most of the time when I'm hired to shoot or style an editorial there is already a story in place...It's my job to make that vision a reality. Therefore the story would come first and the clothes would help build the story. However when it's my own personal idea, my own vision, then yes, I think about the clothes first and the story is built around those clothes. The clothes become the main character and I always say that the models become my Marionette dolls that help me tell my story."

Where do you find inspirations and concepts for your shoots?

"...anywhere and everywhere. Films, magazines, my own life. I did a fashion concept years ago called DEAD RED where I "killed myself" in fabulous designer clothes, a fashion crime scene if you will. It helped me deal with my fear of dying. I'm constantly terrified that I'll die before I can accomplish all of the things I want to accomplish. My bucket list is a rather long one!"

You're pretty much running the show in terms of Midwest stylists. You style for almost every major publication produced in the area and your work has been featured in a slew of national publications- How did you get to where you are?

"Ha, you're sweet! Well, I'm a major self motivator. I'm not happy sitting at home doing nothing, I've always had very big dreams for myself. Ever since we moved to Chicago from the former USSR when I was 8 years old I felt like there was something missing here. I've always wanted to put MIDWEST on the FASHION MAP. I don't want to live in NY, PARIS or MILAN. I love where I am, I love my family and my friends and I love this city. So part of my motivation is to make that happen. To make Chicago be a big player in the fashion circuit. I know it will take time, but I have BIG DREAMS for this town."

Are there specific challenges and/or advantages to being a stylist here versus, say, New York?

"Well of course the major challenge is the resources. I still deal with NY and LA on a weekly basis because we simply don't have the show rooms here to pull all the things I need for editorials. So things are constantly being shipped to me from other states."

Of what shoots or specific shots you most proud of? Where can we view it?

What are you fall obsessions? Music, Literature, Movies, labels, looks, specific items?

"I'm really into collecting fashion books. So that's an obsession that never ends. I'm also really into the whole shearling, furry monster coat look. I just got a killer long haired shearling Missoni coat."

What do you think you'd be doing if not styling?

"Probably owning a boutique or having my own clothing line. I would still definitely be doing something in fashion. I'm totally obsessed!"

You have an adorable little son- what does he think about your clothing obsession? Does he have opinions on what you wear? Did your inherent gift of style pass to the next generation?

"You know as much as I'm obsessed with clothes my son is really not into clothes. His favorite thing? Being naked and playing with cars! Go figure. He doesn't have much of an opinion on what I wear and he always tells me I'm beautiful when I'm in my sweats or just getting out of the shower in my robe. He'll come up and tell me how pretty I am. It just melts my heart."

What does "style" mean to you?

"In my opinion the word "STYLE" means being yourself and not entirely following the trends. I see too many women wearing trends that simply do not look flattering on their bodies and they do so simply because it's "IN STYLE". Great style is knowing who you are, knowing your body and knowing what looks bad. Great style has nothing to do with trend."

Leifsdottir Has Arrived!

Leifsdottir, meaning literally the "daughter of Leif," was a concept created by Johanna Uurasjarvi in the midst of being the Creative Director of Anthropologie, directing strategy and design for apparel, accessories and home.

This season's collection was inspired by the recent exhibit of artist Xavier Veilhan. The dichotomy between modern art and old world become the core of the graphic color palette and crisp, structured silhouettes.

The Cobblestone Jacquard Mini Skirt features a corset detail on back and a peek-a-boo lace hem on the lining. The texture and color is simply adorable and a favorite at SHE.

The McQueen-esque diamond crush print on the Andromeda Sheath Dress is what seals the deal on this one. Simple and flattering silhouette with a couple great details, how can you go wrong??

Viva Vena! by Vena Cava

Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock met at 17 right before they began studying at Parsons. After being rejected from showing their collections at Parson's senior show, the pair decided to branch off on their own. In 2003, Vena Cava was born from a twelve look collection, sewn on the floor of their Brooklyn apartment. Clients such as Blake Lively, Rachel Bilson, and Maggie Gyllenhaal swear by the up-and-coming line, which has also reached into the lingerie and footwear market.

Fall 2010 brought another project to Vena Cava's already growing line, Viva Vena! The diffusion Viva Vena! line is a collection of more basic pieces with the same design aesthetic and inspiration that draws the uptown and downtown gals towards Vena Cava.

Fall Florals

The lovely Erin Kleinberg was kind enough to give us at SHE an exclusive interview about her personal style, as well as her plans for next season's collection!

A couple questions... just because we want to know!

SHE: What is your favorite dish?

EK: SUSHI!

SHE: What is playing on your iPOD/favorite application?

EK: Love the Aloe Blacc song from How to Make it in America, 'I need a dolla', also loving Kid Cudi.

SHE: It's FRIDAY NIGHT! What are you wearing... and where are you going? What shoes are you wearing everyday?

EK: My vintage Balenciaga blouse, with black skinnies and a camel leather belt twisted and wrapped a bunch. Tom Binns fluorescent necklace, Hermes cuff, McQueen skull ring and grandmothers vintage gold coin ring! very into the jewels:) YSL wooden heel pumps from couple falls ago. I have to admit I wear Toms or Nike frees every day. I hope that is not too embarrassing! I looooove being comfortable since I'm always running around and quality controlling at the factory.

Now down to the nitty gritty...

SHE: How long have you been designing, and where did you start?
EK: I always loved my great grandmother's vintage scarf collection and I started making kimono tops out of them 5 years ago. Around that same time, I ran into Mischa Barton at an H&M in Toronto and spoke to her about sending her a few tops and a couple weeks later she was photographed in one! Soon after, the capsule collection was picked up by Holt Renfrew and TNT in Canada. Ever since then I have toyed with the idea of developing a line, but it didn't really happen until I came back from living in NYC in April 2008 and had a hard time getting a gig because of the recession.[While in NY, I worked at W directly with Fashion Director Alex White ---to this day, the best experience of my life. Alex taught me what it means to work and I became so efficient there.]

I was lucky enough to be picked up for my first season in the US by Barneys New York and Intermix, which is a dream scenario for any brand!

SHE: Who are your design inspirations?

EK: I love personal style, I spend hours on jakandjil.com looking at what people mix and match. As for celebrity inspirations, Vanessa Traina has a huge impact on me and the Olsens are always on the mood boards as well; they truly are fashion icons. Not only do I love their personal style, but I'm also inspired by their savvy business sense. I can get inspiration from anything that catches my eye. For Fall, I was really into the fabrication and the unique color of my grandmother's old jewelry box. This season I was inspired by music, and festivals of summer. It translated into this sort of chic hippie vibe you will see on Irina in my new look book! Lots of tie dye, floral, netting and mesh.

SHE: What is it about your current collection that you feel resonated with customers?- we can't seem to keep it in stock!!

EK: I think that customers are loving this season because it looks great on the body but is also practical. My collection is realistic for the fashion conscious woman who works, has things to do and places to go. So we made a collection that is livable but not compromised aesthetically. Everything is super relaxed and comfy.

SHE: At SHE we are always asking "where is she wearing this?". Where do you see the Erin Kleinberg girl going? Who is the EKleinberg customer?

EK: What I hear a lot is that the pieces are super easy to wear, and can really take you from day to night. I love when a girl will wear a sequin piece during the day with some vintage jean shorts, or a plainer more casual tee out at night, all about the irony:).

SHE: If there was one person that embodied your collection- living or passed- who would it be?

EK: I just shot my lookbook with Irina lazareanu, and I think it was the most excited I have been about a collection yet. She was so chic in the pieces, and she wore the clothes, they didn't wear her. But at the same time, I've been so lucky with the unique girls that have shot my lookbooks. Each very different, but each very erinkleinberg. And that's what the brand is- not just for one girl or one type of individual- it translates to so many women in so many different ways depending on how you wear the pieces. One person may see it as a staple for their everyday getup, but someone else may see it as an awesome piece for a party or for going out.

SHE: We ALL mix our high-end pieces with our low-end pieces- What designers and styles do YOU pair your pieces with?

EK: For a regular day at work always pair them with my J-brand cargos or my Wang chino/sweats--such a great look with no effort at all. I'm always wearing my tanks under Smythe blazers. Another personal favorite is this one piece from my Fall 09 collection that (Theo Richards modeled in) a heather grey cardi with a gorgeous silk velvet navy shawl collar…. I actually don't take it off much :)

SHE: What directions and ideas do you see as some of the season's key trends?

EK: I love the printed harems--so cute, so easy. I just got an amazing camel wrap coat from Smythe which I am super excited about. I think Phoebe Philo and Hannah Mcgibbon have re-evaluated everyone's vision for Fall; it feels super grown up, very much about the silk blouses, perfectly tailored trousers, camel galore, and definitely the structured bags. Super lady like. I like it, feels very fresh.

What can we expect from Erin Kleinberg for Spring?

EK: COLOR AND PRINTS!!!. and lots of it! I feel like I just woke up one day and felt like wearing color and sourcing fresh prints! It all started with a gorgeous vintage pompom print from the 40's that we recreated, and it just spawned from there. I have subtle tie dyes, plaids, muted florals…. I'm really excited about this collection!!

The Obakki Foundation

In 2009, these were the three questions that Treana Peake of the Obakki Foundation asked 150 children living in orphanages in Cameroon, Africa. Their profound words, thoughts and feelings have been the inspiration for the Obakki Foundation's collection of screen printed t-shirts, scarves and totes.

The Obakki Foundation's key mission is to provide assistance to children, adults and families in developing nations in becoming self-sufficient. The Obakki Foundation partners with individuals, groups and communities to help the inhabitants of local villages to have their voices heard for fundamental rights of health and education. Involvement in the foundation has many different levels, ranging from wearing a product of the Obakki Foundation collection, to finding corporate sponsors and planning events to raise awareness.

London's Finest Vintage at SHE

A HUGE shoutout goes to a member of the SHE team, Miss Valerie!
While traveling, Val discovered a unique vintage shop in London called One of a Kind, which has pieces that truly are, ONE of a kind.
We are lucky enough to have a few of these amazing pieces added to our Modern Doll Vintage curated collection, all of which are 100% authentic.

First off are the two Salvatore Ferragamo sling bags. The black leather slingbag has an attached strap, and doubles as a clutch. The second is a divine cream lizard bag with detachable shoulder strap.

If you are a fan of mod design and color, the Emilio Pucci clutches will have you melting. The little blue striped clutch is a personal favorite! The psychedelic print on the envelope clutch is reminiscent of the flower power days.

What is a vintage collection without a little Chanel in it??? This vibrant backpack has classic Chanel chain detailing on the shoulder straps and CC's stitching.

Last but certainly not least, the loveliest little Hermes, made exclusively for Bonwit Teller. In brand new condition, this little gem is a needle in a haystack because only a small number were produced.

A couple of weeks ago we sent pieces from our Saturday Nite Sunday Morning collection to our favorite fashion bloggers around the world.

Lena from Quality Rivets is the first to share Saturday Nite Sunday Morning with her readers! We took into consideration the little nugget that she is expecting, and sent Lena a graphic long tank, which she added her own personal touch to by adding a little DIY scrunch.
